I am out in the not very wilds of Oxfordshire in England's green and 
pleasant land. My order for ADSL was today turnd down by what is 
effectively the national monopolist, British Telecom. The grounds given 
are: "the line quality is too poor and would not guarantee an acceptable 
level of service.".

I am in fact three miles from the telephone exchange as the crow flies 
and about five by cable run. Can this really be a problem for them? Or 
are they just to tight fisted to fix the cable and whatever boosters may 
be attached?

It matters to me because to the best of my knowlege there are no 
alternatives here, except possibly some sort of expensive and slow 
satellite link. Certainly no one is ever going to run cable out to a 
country hamlet of six houses.
