Although you may be 5 miles by what you think is the cable distance, often it can be MUCH MUCH more. Its not unusual for cable to run in a totally different direction, to then loop back before it gets to a location. Also, depending on the age of the cable, and what other problems it may have, it could honestly be too poor for DSL.
