>That is truely bizarre, because Apple stopped shipping OS 9 with OS X >back with Jaguar (10.2). At least according to Apple, and based on the >copies of OS X I've had since then, they appear to be telling the truth.
I may be an arrogant prick, but I'm always willing to admit when I'm wrong. I just found this on Apple's web site. Tech Note 301408, Using Restore discs with computers that ship with Mac OS X 10.3.7 or later <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301408> >Install Classic Support > >If you can't part with your Classic applications (those that were designed >to work with Mac OS 9 and earlier), you need to install Classic Support >before you can use them. Here's how: > >Tip: Don't want to use Classic? You can avoid it by using Mac OS X >versions of your applications instead, if they exist (check with the >software manufacturer). > 1 Back up your essential files. This is a wise precaution even > though >you won't be erasing the volume. > 2 Grab your Mac OS 9 Install disc or Mac OS X Install disc 2 > (whichever >came with your computer) and insert it into the computer. > 3 Double-click "Install Mac OS 9 System Support." > 4 Follow the onscreen instructions. > 5 After selecting the destination disk for installation, choose > your >language from the Custom Install screen. So going off what they imply in this, and from Roger's experience, it looks like Apple has in fact moved the Classic subsystem into an "optional install". So Roger may have been right, and after the first disc, had he checked the System Pref, there may not have been a Classic pref panel. But before I appear to be TOTALLY wrong, I wish to note on my behalf I also said the following: >What may be possible is, your copy of OS X is a restore CD from a newer >Mac. I believe Apple is still supplying new Macs with a way to put OS 9 >on from their restore CDs. It is not part of the default install, but has >to be done by request. So it looks like I called it... Roger's OS X install for his Dalmation was from a restore CD set for a newer Mac. Shame shame Roger... but what do you expect from someone that actually bought a Dalmation iMac... but I guess it is better that he bought a Dalmation then a Flower Power one! ;-p I leave a final verdict on it until someone can verify by checking after installing just the first CD. Like I said, my 10.3.5, and my 10.4 installers both included Classic by default, but they are developer editions, which I *think* but can not confirm, are the same as the Retail versions... but either way, this looks like it is just something with the versions that ship with a Mac, and possibly only after 10.3.7 based on the tech note. I still strongly suspect Roger's Apple friend did not mean Classic wasn't installed, but rather meant OS 9 wasn't installed. -chris <http://www.mythtech.net> ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe send a mail message with a SUBJECT line of "unsubscribe" to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
