And Tannis sent me two scripts, one which deletes only the
attachments and not the email, and another which deletes both.

Well, I have that script, but I just didn't know that it will
trash the attachment as well as the message.  Live and learn!

I appreciate all this very much, and so in the usual spirit of
mutual cooperation I will send the scripts to any other retards
who, like me, have been stumbling along without them for years.
