>They have the Rolls Royce
>auto that lasts a long time, why not a computer?

Look at the new Macbook Pro, as an example.

PCI express slots did not exist 3 years ago.
USB did not exist 10 years ago.
FireWire was not available 10 years ago
Bluetooth did not exist 6 years ago.
DDR memory did not exist 5 years ago.

The probelm with computers is not that they are built obslete, but that
the technology is nowhere near stable

There are somethings that could be "long term". But, consider a "case
standard" for laptops, so you can put new displays, motherboards, etc,
but the cost of that is every computer costs more, and you are forced
into a size that is irrelevent.

Imagine a "long lived" MP3 player, designed 5 years ago. Do you want a
shoebox for your music, or an iPod nano?

> It took 200 years for Rome to fall and I wonder how much
>longer we can hold out. I know I am sick of trying to interpret poor
>English from tech supports from India, Mexico etc. I don't mind that
>we are outsourcing but I do mind that we are not receiving proper
>service.

You are hitting on another area. The reasons for economic decline are
many, and few who understand the causes can communicate that to the many
who want today's politics to suit their short term tastes/goals.

Lets assume, for a joke, that an economist could "prove" that abortions
would lead to the fall of the environment in 50 years. Talk to someone
who supports abortions that another program they like, environmentalism,
is being destroyed by another behavior they also support. People cannot
think like that. Choice "inside an idiology" is not possible for most. So
I believe the long term decline of the USA will continue, until either it
collapses, or reorganizes. I fear the former, as people are so stuck in
points of view, that reorganizing is so unlikely. Lets try to keep it
from happening another 50 years, though, eh?
