Computers do last a long time. They just need occasional maintenance,
just like that Rolls Royce. See how long your $300,000 Rolls lasts if you
never change the oil. Computers are the same way. If you don't do regular
maintenance on them, they will eventually seize up and give you problems.

I have machines that run just fine that date back into the 70's. They
aren't terribly useful, but that is because technology and needs have
changed so dramatically since the 70's. To bring it to your Rolls
analogy, using an IBM 5110 to do your word processing today would work
fine... but it would be like driving around in a 19th century steam
engine car. You can do it, but why would you want to when you could use a
modern computer and get the job done faster, easier, cheaper (ie: why
drive that 1800's steam car when you can drive a 2006 model and get to
where you are going faster, cheaper, safer, and in much more comfortable
surroundings)

The reason people throw out computers rather than fix them, is because
they have gotten so inexpensive to buy, that the cost of repairs often is
higher than the cost to replace. Cars get fixed because cars are much
more expensive so repair costs are still the cheaper way to go. Rest
assured, when people spend $20,000 on their computer, when it breaks
down, it gets fixed and not replaced.

Actually, I'm sick of the outsourcing. I'm tired of my friends losing
their jobs because the company needed to trim some money. Of course, I
can't fault the companies, as often they have no choice. Salaries are
getting too high to support and worse benefits are killing the companies
(although I do get pissy when my friends lose their jobs in the name of
cost cutting, and then the execs of the same companies get multi-million
dollar bonuses at the end of the year because they did such a great job
at saving money).
