The more I use Thunderbird, the more I miss Emailer. It's not that Thunderbird is actually bad. It just doesn't work as well. (It does have some bugs: even though I tell it to use plain text, it invariably comes up in HTML when I reply to a message or compose a new one.
Try Tools > Account Settings > Composition and Addressing > Uncheck Compose Messages in HTML
