Since the list is not exactly busy with actual CE stuff, I hope not
too many of you will be offended if I pass along something that it
took me all day to learn.
When I ran Disk Utility, it revealed a few problems, but Disk Utility
was not able to fix them. Chris suggested that I try Applejack, a
free program, before investing in Tech Tool or Diskwarrior. Sure
enough, Applejack fixed the problems, but from the time it launched,
my iMacG5's fan ran like a 747 running up the engines for takeoff. I
guess that was normal, but then the fan continued to run after I
restarted, and no matter how many times I shut down and restarted, it
kept blowing.
Finally, on macosxhint.com I found a post with a suggested solution.
I just unplugged the power cord for a few minutes and then plugged it
back in. When I started again, everything was back to normal.
Just in case anyone else tried Applejack, I wanted to pass this along.
I think I'll still get Diskwarrior. Its just that ever since I went
to OSX, things have run so smooth that I've never felt the need as I
did in the past.
