Applejack does sound like it guides you through something that might 
otherwise be a bit scary - I find everytime I have to work in Terminal or 
console mode I get nervous I will do something irredeemably wrong!

I'm using Tiger too - and I got the idea and instructions out of my 
Panther edition of The Missing Manual.

But you might as well continue to use Applejack now that you know how to 
turn off the fans! (I have occasionally had that happen to me under other 
circumstances and am glad to know how to make it stop.)
