That turned up one error, although it didn't fix the problem; I forgot I had already SSH'd into a node when I tried re-running all lxc commands. That is what was leading to the lxc errors. After I exited the SSH session, lxc works; or at least, it never logs an error, either in my own code or in any of the tutorial code.
That said, it doesn't fix the original problem.
