Hi Eric,

I can comment on the windows side.. I always get that error about 
class book not found, but it shouldn't matter if you don't want to 
export from lyx into pdf or html.
I only use the doze version of lyx while traveling, and it's quite ok. 
The main box is a dapper with emc2 configured to build documentation.
The rest is magic ;)
