I am fairly sure this is a stepper machine that is fitted with linear
scales. My understanding is that leadscrews, steppers and backlash
compensation is working perfectly well, but that it would be useful to
feed the linear scale positions into Axis (to be displayed as an
accurate indicator of machine position in CNC and manual mode) and
potentially also to trip f-error if the scales and stepgens disagree
by more than a backlash.

Note that as far as I can see Brian has no encoders on the motors.
There is no actual motor-pos-fb signal, other than what the stepgen
thinks should have happened.
