Yes, but if you attach encoders to a stepper-driven machine, it becomes a servo machine. His problem, as I now see it (my understanding changes every email exchange) is that he wants to keep treating it as an open-loop stepper system while in CNC mode, but use the scales as a DRO when in E-stop. Although it might be possible to do this, it seems completely the WRONG way to do things. If you put encoders on the axes, you ought to use them ALL the time. Just my servo-centric opinion, since I have been a satisfied servo user since 1987.
