That's a good point, it should be possible to use any 2-channel
brushed-DC motor controller as a stepper driver.

For example, a 7i40 is rated at 10A. You would set the PWM rate to
suit the current requirement, then toggle the DIR and ENA pins in a
sequence to generate the steps.

However, the Mesa Hostmot2 stepgen isn't really flexible enough for
this, so you might end up with a weird hybrid system of software
stepgen and hardware PWM etc.

Also, the 7i29 is $300 anyway  (the 7i40 is $150)
