This is a somewhat old thread, but I thought I'd finish it by telling you what was actually wrong :)
If you are trying to boot over a SATA interface, and you get errors like: "ALERT! /dev/disks/by-uuid/<a-big-hex-number-string> does not exist. Dropping to a shell." Go into the BIOS settings and check the "SATA Mode". When this is set to "IDE" I get the above error. When set to "AHCI" booting is successful. That's it! I haven't done any other testing, but latency-test is giving be <10,000ns jitter in both the 1mS and 25uS threads on an ASUS P8H61-M LX2 R2.0 motherboard.
