well, it is a state by state legal thing, but seriously -- in some 
places you can defend yourself with lethal force if you are in danger.  
They were trespassing, and asked to leave.  If law enforcement (LE) was 
complained to, she probably would have needed to prove endangerment, but 
it could have easily been legal if she could have.

I had a friend a *long ago* who was home alone with her kids, and one 
of the drunk locals was beating down her front door and threatening to 
kill her and her kids...  She let loose with a double barrel shotgun 
through the front door-- which did not end as humorously.  She was taken 
to court for killing the guy, and was acquitted because she was 
endangered, and they guy was quoted all over town how they did not 
deserve to live (due to their non-conforming religious beliefs).  
Decades later the only thing she would have changed was waiting until 
the guy actually broke down the door and then let him have it -- in 
Texas there apparently was/is a distinction between breaking into your 
home with intent to murder and trespassing.
