its modal
when in edm mode, enable fwd/bwd
when in feed mode ( positioning for next cut ), disable it

and if you want to try faking edm
the error signal that generate velocity and direction
can be faked by the analog hat of an old usb joystick
ctr = null pt
fwd = analog advance
rev = analog reverse
(or use even older joystick to old db15 joystick input )
