I had a quick look at the docs from cnc-school. I don't have much experience 
with lathe, I'm dedicated to mills
So you are right. On Siemens-cnc for lathe there are no M6 commands.
But this it true for "simple" lathe only.

So if linuxcnc would like to offer the same, it should be limited to lathe and 
for so be an ini-entry.

Robert, sorry for my hard words. My thinking is around multiaxis machines and 
inconsistency should not be desirable. But there are special cases, that allow 
exceptions :)

... by the way: the distinction between tool-definition and tool-change is not 
Fanuc specific. In Heidenhain you have a "Tool-Def" and "Tool-Call" ...
