There is a case where the home position MUST be different than the switch position. If you use a limit switch for home, then the home position MUST cause the machine to back away from the switch. Also, when using encoder index pulses to make the homing more repeatable, then the hole position will be slightly different from the point where the switch trips. You then have the choice for the axis to continue toward the switch, or to back away, while searching for the index pulse. I think all of these options are necessary for specific machine configurations.
