I tell people I'm a Radio Interference Engineer. I can cure it - or cause
it.
In the US, the FCC limits permissible RF field strength only to protect
public health. The field strength limit is not hard to comply with at a
reasonable distance. From 1.34 to 3.0 Mhz, the limit is 824/f volts per
meter, or 615 reducing to about 27.5 volts per meter at 30 MHz. My 40 meter
transmissions are required not to expose the general public to more than 117
volts per meter. And that's averaged over 30 minutes. If I disregard
reflections, I'd need over twice my FCC authorized output power to hit that
limit.
The 100 watts most Amateurs really use produces a sizable field up close,
but usually not anywhere near the FCC's maximum at a reasonable distance.
