If cost is a somewhat secondary condition, then you might want to look at
Antenna Research Associates' Model BBH-500 magnetic field probe. This gadget
uses a thick, nearly 24" long ferrite rod, with a current probe around the
mid-point of the rod. The output of the CP is then passed through filters
and an amplifier. IIRC, bandwidth was 30 Hz to 30 MHz. This is the hottest
H-field probe I have ever seen.
Moving down the scale, you can find shielded magnetic loop antennas on eBay
for maybe $50 or so (YMMV). (Search for Stoddart or Empire or Fairchild or
Honeywell antennas.)
OTOH, you might want to look at Honeywell magnetoresistive detectors. I
bought a two-axis HMC-1002 chip to play with a few months ago. It has a max
field of +/- 2 Gauss, resolves down to tens of microgauss, and has a
bandwidth of DC to 5 MHz. Just feed the chip 5 VDC, and you get back a DC
voltage proportional to the H field. I'm not an expert on this technology,
but I think the magnetoresistive technology is very non-responsive to the
E-field, making this a very pure H-field sensor. And it only costs about
$20. See
