A friend of mine did that to be able to plug his TV set into one of those very old two pin receptacles that doesn't have the one larger polarizing slot. After a few months of very high electric bills he investigated and found that his TV set plug was in backwards causing the chassis ground to be HOT including the coax line to his TV antenna. He obviously didn't have his antenna grounded but there must have been enough leakage current to drive his electric bill up.
Do you also wire things around your house without turning off the breaker? I do that. I wonder what other crazy things safety engineers are doing out there like cutting the ground tab off the plug of their microwave. (Every time my wife revs up the microwave I wet my pants and forget who I am for half an hour.)
