Brian, I too change light switches and wall outlets without shutting off the breaker. This leaves the lights on in the room and provides an element of danger and excitement. People often cringe when I work on operating HV equipment.

After a few months of very high electric bills he investigated and found that his TV set plug was in backwards causing the chassis ground to be HOT including the coax line to his TV antenna. He obviously didn't have his antenna grounded but there must have been enough leakage current to drive his electric bill up. Do you also wire things around your house without turning off the breaker? I do that. I wonder what other crazy things safety engineers are doing out there like cutting the ground tab off the plug of their microwave. (Every time my wife revs up the microwave I wet my pants and forget who I am for half an hour.)
