Brian Remembered something else from my distant past.
Went to install some audio equipment in a cousin's house - which had very old wiring and small 2A 3-round pin sockets in some places (you have to be very old to remember those, even in the UK!), but could not get it to power up. Checked socket with meter -> odd result. Took top off socket to find only two wires feeding it. One to the Live/Line and the other to the Earth/ground! Previously my cousin had had radio running with a similarly wired plug!
