I used to be the Acheson Colloids reresentative on the West Coast for about 10
years.  Now I am an outsourced sales engineer for vairous shielding companies.
 I help customers select shielding processes using various coating
technologies.
 
The ED 550 is the worst of the latest and least expensive technology in
paints.  Silver coated copper paint is more conductive and is thinner in dry
film thickness than the ED 550 nickel pigment.  Nickel used to be the big
seller in the 70-80's until Spraylat developed their copper paint.  Now most
shielding is done with copper or copper/silver paint.  Only old school
painters use ED 550 anymore as the volume of this paint sales went down
resulting in price increases due to losing volume pricing where it is now more
expensive than copper paint while still being inferior in shielding
effectiveness.  You need to check out UL approvals for your plastic and paint
combination.  If Spraylat y-2000 or Acheson ED 6050 is listed, use these
instead as they are better and cheaper.  Copper paints can be used at 0.5 mils
(vs 2+ mils for nickel) and have better attenuation than nickel.
 
I suggest Spraylat Y-2000 as the workhorse standard paint even though they
were my competition when I used to work for Acheson.  I also help customers
design plastic enclosure seams for their enclosures to reduce masking costs. 
These paints have problems with masking and masking is the major portion of
the cost of painting enclosures with conductive paints.
