A mixture is necessary, otherwise thinking becomes fossilized.

Come to England. I can get you to several committee meetings as an 
observer. Your expenses will not be reimbursed but you might get a free 
beer or lunch.

Consider that if you are not  represented but your competitors are, they 
gain an advantage that may well far more than offset the costs of 
representation.  Some of them may be unscrupulous enough to write a 
standard that is exceptionally difficult for your products to meet. 
That's not anecdotal - it's happened.

Even if they don't exploit their position, they get to know about the 
requirements of new standards far earlier than you do, so they have far 
longer (typically 2 to 3 years) to prepare for the change.
