My simple little mind says that only verrrrry experienced compliance engineers should be members of a WG or TC.
But I have always wanted to be a spectator to these assemblies of experienced engineers that propose and write standards. In any case, few companies are willing/able to afford the loss of engineering time or expenses for an engineer be a member of these groups. Just my opinion. luck, Brian From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Robert Johnson Sent: Friday, May 26, 2006 9:51 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Product Safety Educational Programs Following the introductory courses offered by agencies which have already been discussed, the primary way to develop and maintain expertise in this field is to participate in the standards activities. Membership and participation in the US Technical Advisory Group for IEC standards and the UL Standards Technical Panels for the standards involved will provide insight into the basis for the requirements and provide in-depth familiarity with the standards. If you belong to ITIC, their working groups provide a lot of information. A good background in engineering is important and you can assemble your own syllabus to include courses on plastic materials and molding, metal fabrication, switching power supplies, test and measurement, electrophysiology, combustion, management, CAD, the basics of electrical, chemical and mechanical engineering, and other specialties relating to your business. There are some schools with good fire science or safety curricula like WPI, Univ of Wisconsin, UC Berkley, Univ of Maryland and others. Some schools will allow you to assemble courses and earn degrees in your own chosen field of study.
