After a year or so in a polluted atmosphere, the aluminium sheets won't

Aluminium pop-rivets have a steel pin inside, which, in a salty 
atmosphere, can make them corrode rather swiftly due to electrochemical 
effects. Chromate-passivated pins used to be available, which were 
better, but they've fallen under the RoHS Directive in Europe. I don't 
know whether there is any replacement.
