There is a lot of concerns when going to metalized enclosures,
coating thickness particularly in corners and protrubances, masking of
any air openings that pass through the shell and mating edges, mating
surface contact pressures, seam sealing, grounding to the metalize
coating, mold wear etc. There are environmental concerns with the
application of the material, some worry about what plastics and coatings
can be used together - the safety appprovals will have some say in that
because of long term aging and flaking etc. On the plastic enclosures
I've seen there is often metal compartments buried inside of the plastic
enclousure anyway. 
Cell phones seem to be the biggest succesful user of metallized plastic
and my laptop is plastic or at least non-ferous metal inner frame. If
you have any contact with some anyone in the cell phone industry you
might pick their brains a bit and it might be very instructive. Heck
tear apart an old cellphone and/or laptop paying close attention to how
they addressed some of the issues above.
        I wouldn't assume that this is going to be a real easy process
and it'll take a full design commitment to get there.

I am not familiar with the SE comparisons but I do recall that trying to
ground/bond to the coatings was a problem.

We are hoping to move from metal to coated ABS enclosures for various
products as these provide a significant cost saving. Thus I would
welcome
any comments as to how to ensure that the coated ABS versions are as
resilient from an EMC point of view as the metal ones.
In general is it possible to achieve the same shielding effectiveness
from
a
coated ABS enclosure as from a metal one?
