We continue to digress, but it's a Friday before a 3 day weekend (in the US)!
Reverse thrust props have hit the model airplane scene allowing for some pretty wild aerobatics. Model aviators have been standing stunt planes on their tails a few feet off the ground, hovering really, for years. Now they are able to stand the planes on their noses. Don't think a full scale pilot would chance that! I've walked away from every crash I've had while piloting (model) aircraft. Many were pilot error (ok most), some equipment failure. At least one was traced to radio interference (sort of back on topic). Some years ago, some airlines attempted to save money by backing 727s out of the gate by using reverse thrust. I recall being on an Eastern 727 that backed out of its gate and into the alley at Fort Lauderdale. The pilot couldn't see where he was going, and relied on the ground crew for directions. Extremely noisy. Prop-jets use reverse pitch to slow the plane on landing. The Blue Angels' Fat Albert demonstrates a short-field landing using reverse pitch, and then backs into a 90-degree turn to face the grandstands. One more story... on a United stretch- DC-8 on descent into Denver between thunderheads, the pilot reversed the thrust on the inside engines to spoil the lift on part of the wing to hasten the descent.
