One aspect to consider is how much of the sensor data is used to protect 
the machine from damaging itself rather than injuring the operator. 
Protecting the machine is a matter for the manufacturer, unless failure 
could result in injury to people; protecting the operator is a matter of 
standards and regulation. So you might be able to simplify the operator 
protection system by making the machine protection system separate.
