I would like to expand this discussion slightly to include EN 55024. The definition of a telecommunications port is not quite so clear (in my opinion). If my product includes a Ethernet/LAN port specified for a CAT5 cable, does the additional functional test at discrete frequencies for conducted and radiated field immunity apply?

Twisted pair Ethernet (10/100/1000TX) is certainly within the domain of telecom ports. If an interface is specified up to 15m, I would not put it in that category. The intended use of an Ethernet port for connections within one rack would not qualify as an exception for me as the end use of the equipment may change over the the product lifetime and I expect that the maximum cable length will be used. A LAN port spec’d by the customer for a CAT5e cable is an obvious Telecom port but, would it be omitted from this test if installation practice limited the cable from one shelf to another in the same rack? What if the same cable was intended to interface with an adjacent rack? If the concern is to limit the amount of interference that would re-radiate off the LAN cable(s) and potentially cause interference issues then, would maximum cable length based on the wavelengths of the test frequencies serve as justification to apply or not to apply this test? Is there any guidance available that addresses this issue and will help resolve some of these questions with a focus on the intent of the Telecom Port Emissions test? RS-232 normally is limited to 15 meters of cable, and that was not considered to be telecom length. But, the Australian committee claimed that there were installations with 1000 feet of cable. Not running at full speed, obviously. Thus the qualifying phrase. The note to this section makes it clear that USB ports are not to be considered telecom ports. The above however does assume that the USB port is being used for its normal role of interconnecting components of an IT system. I'm sure someone will come up with a scenario whereby it could be considered to be a telecoms port! Mike Gartman, Richard wrote: In EN55022 there is a reference to a Telecommunication port.
