Since cable length appears to be of significant importance in determining
which cables are candidates for this test, why was it not added into one of
the later revisions of EN55022? A LAN port spec’d by the customer for a
CAT5e cable is an obvious Telecom port but, would it be omitted from this test
if installation practice limited the cable from one shelf to another in the
same rack? What if the same cable was intended to interface with an adjacent
rack?

If the concern is to limit the amount of interference that would re-radiate
off the LAN cable(s) and potentially cause interference issues then, would
maximum cable length based on the wavelengths of the test frequencies serve as
justification to apply or not to apply this test?

Is there any guidance available that addresses this issue and will help
resolve some of these questions with a focus on the intent of the Telecom Port
Emissions test?

You are correct about the impact of the long cable. And this is not a normal
intended use for RS-232. Thus it is not considered a telecom port unless you
are doing something out of the ordinary.

I assume 1000’ of cable would force a low baud rate. (perhaps 300) Is it
a valid to assume that is intended use of RS232 today?

The scenario that caused the addition of the “assuming it is used as
intended” phrase was RS-232. RS-232 normally is limited to 15 meters of
cable, and that was not considered to be telecom length. But, the Australian
committee claimed that there were installations with 1000 feet of cable. Not
running at full speed, obviously. Thus the qualifying phrase.

Hi Richard,

the 2006 edition of 55022 defines telecoms ports in section 3.6. The note to
this section makes it clear that USB ports are not to be considered telecom
ports.

The above however does assume that the USB port is being used for its normal
role of interconnecting components of an IT system. I'm sure someone will
come up with a scenario whereby it could be considered to be a telecoms port!

In EN55022 there is a reference to a Telecommunication port.

Is a USB connection considered a Telecommunication port?

The USB has a power and two data lines. Does this make it a telecommunication
port?

Thank you for you assistance
