I believe that warranty requirements vary from country to country. Italy does
require a 2 year warranty on some product types. I can’t point you to the
specific law, but this link is to a BBC story about a recent incident on the
subject.

Here is the same manufacturer’s statement on warranty law in the UK. It’s
interesting that England and Wales have different requirements from Scotland.

I intend no offence towards this particular company even though they are a
competitor of my employer. I am providing it only as an example of the
differing warranty requirements and the potential ramifications of
noncompliance.

The laws will also differ in what must be covered. Italy’s 2 year requirement
is more comprehensive than England’s 5 year requirement.

In the United States, you have the complications of different requirements
under express warranties and the implied warranty of merchantability.

The opinions expressed are my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of
my employer. I am not a lawyer and I am not providing legal advice. I recommend
you work with your corporate attorney or outside council to ensure compliance
with warranty law in the jurisdictions where your products are sold.

Subject: [PSES] Off Topic - Warranty Question

Hello People,

This is not a compliance type question (at least I don't think so).

Question comes up, is there anywhere written into law or regulation that a
manufacturer of electronic product must provide a warranty on a product? More
specifically, is there any term associated with such a requirement?

One of our international sales guys thought the EU had a minimum two year
warranty requirement. But we can't find that in writing anywhere we have
looked. Any input from the group will be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your comments.

Regards,

Scott
