I don't think that's a very good idea for a real machine.

You may want to try using a stock Ubuntu CD, then following the 
instructions at 
<http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Installing_EMC2> section 
2.  If there's a problem with installation, there may be other problems 
lurking, so I'd consider the machine defective until you manage to 
install and run memtest for a few days.  Memtest can be run from the 
LiveCD or the stock Ubuntu CD.
