Ken is right - like lathe threading, rigid tapping (assuming I finish it one of these days) will not require exact control of the spindle. You just use an encoder, run it at "about the right speed" and the axis will track it. I plan for it to work with no more control than forward/reverse from EMC. However if your spindle slows down with higher load, as on a small machine, you sure could run a pid and close the loop in emc2.
