Hi, I'm seeking for some comments about how to build a mill controller with EMC2, as I'm completely new to this topic. I got a 12 years old desktop mill, which was manufactured by KERN- Microtechnic [1]. The machine is in a very good condition, but some parts of the original mill controller (a rack mounted controller manufactured by NUM) are missing and most of the documentation is lost. Thus it was not possible to get the old controller operational again and EMC2 seemed to be a reasonable alternative to a commercial product.
First a few technical details about the desktop mill. It should have a resolution or 5µm, whereas switches allow to detect the point of origin and Haidenhain rulers deliver a quadrature signal for relative position measurement. The mill is equipped with Faulhaber DC servo motors [2] for the X/Y/Z axis, which are coupled to tacho-generators [3]. I thought about using VitalSystem's MOTENCLite PCI [4] card. It's analog outputs should drive a DC servo amplifier [5] through a standard +/-10V interface. The tacho-generators will be used to regulate the velocity of the DC servo motors, which is set by EMC2 (the servo amplifier implements the closed loop control). Three of the 4 quadrature inputs of the PCI card will be connected to the Haidenhain rulers [6] and the generic digital inputs will be used for the switches to detect the point of origin. Since I don't know much about EMC2 yet, I would like to know, if my (early) concept is feasible and what should be considered when building a mill controller with EMC2. It would also be nice, if a MOTENCLite user can share his experiences with this card.
