Heh, We told Digikey the Avnet price and they came down to ~10.00... For a parallel port replacement Ethernet, maybe a thing to consider is just a single point to point link to the (multi axis) endpoint and some very simple master slave protocol. The slave would get a packet, unpack to hardware registers, and echo a new packet or return data. I've been thinking of doing this with a low cost FPGA card like the 7I43.
