The slave devices still share a single set of wires, so a misconfigured slave can cause some havoc. With a single slave device, there wouldn't be any turnaround problems though.
Anyone looking for hardware - check out <http://www.rs485.com>. They have loads of converters, repeaters, isolators, and other doodads for RS485.
