Here is an animation that shows the process: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7831550688320827327 The cutting tooth actually traces out an elliptical path, but it's so close to a straight line that it doesn't matter for most applications. The larger the cutter radius relative to the polygon, the straighter it will be.
