BTW a 5 1/4" floppy step motor make a nice quadrature jogwheel input device. 
200 CPR, ball bearings, a little detent torque and usually free... Just needs 
a dual comparator with hysteresis (LM393) to translate to TTL levels. Also 
with hysteresis the quadrature outputs stay put when the jogwheel is not 
touched. This is for relative motion only (counts will be lost starting and 
stopping)
