Gene is probably running dapper, so what he said might not apply. On Dapper (Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake) when you shutdown you get the progress bar, and messages with the actions done underneith. On Hardy (Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron) when you shutdown you only get the progress bar. However pressing Alt-F7 gets you to a text page which displays the shutdown actions (at some point I noticed it jumps back to the graphical page with the progress bar, but using Alt-F7 I could get back to the message page). It finishes with the message "Will now halt!" and on the -rtai kernel it obviously sits there forever.
