I've tried rem'ing it out of my hal file, made no difference. EMC still
works 50% of the time, the start, no start error still happens.

That was already done. The line

install parport_pc /bin/true

exists in /etc/modprobe.d/emc2.

Mhh, my shop PC is not easy to get at, deliberately, it's enclosed to
protect it. It self boots on mains power up to the shop, but now won't
shut down - is it safe to cycle the mains power at that limbo stage?

Hadn't spotted that in the documentation :(

Apart from the above niggles - main one is lack of easy screen designer.
Touch screen support is important for me, some aspects of the screens
are not touch screen friendly and I'd prefer to add bigger screen
buttons and jig a few things around. 

I don't have a keyboard or mouse anywhere near my CNC machines. They
don't mix with coolant and swarf :)

The other questions can wait for now.
