It was doing a forced file system check after an unclean shutdown. While the ext3 file system is more robust that previous Linux/Unix file systems, this is NOT a good thing to do regularly. If you have a multi-hundred GB disk drive full of stuff, it can take an hour or more to check the entire drive. (I know from experience at work.) You can cut the power after doing a controlled shutdown and it gets to the "power down" message, although it won't power itself down.
