Jim,

If your Windows system sees a single file named
ubuntu-8.04-desktop-emc2-aj07-i386.iso on the
CD, then the CD was not burned in the manner
necessary. An ISO file is an image of a complete
CD, not a single file intended to be put on the CD.
Your CD burning software should have an option to
burn a CD image from an ISO file. The name
of the feature varies with the CD burning software
that you have. The resulting CD will be setup to
boot and has a Linux file system on it.

Once you have a CD that is correctly burned, it
should be booted. This may require setting an
option in your BIOS if it is not already enabled.

Once you manage to boot the CD it will offer you
a menu of options including testing the CD, testing
memory, and loading a Live system. This last option
will allow you to test Linux with real time extension
and EMC on your PC without modifying your existing
Windows setup.

First, your machine needs to have enough memory
to run the Live system. I think 256 Megabytes is
needed. I also highly recommend running the CD
integrity test and a memory test before you go too
far. Flaws in either case can have you chasing things
in circles with misleading symptoms.

Regards,
Steve Stallings
