Well when you first started the thread I suspected a bad portion of memory. But when you changed out the PC and still had the same problem I sort-of scrap that idea. Unless you used the same memory?! Then I remembered how much trouble that one machine was and thought "it could be a bad chip heating like that stinking pocket setting machine that racked our brains for a year". But, it could be the buffer/swap problem you mentioned. If you could increase the size of your memory and it still did the same thing you could most likely rule that out. Linux is pretty good at dealing with bad hardware though. If it is something critical that is bad it wont use it. (Read will not boot/run). Your hard drive, it is not a an older Seagate is it? Seagate had some issues with buffer overflows and data loss a few years back. I ran into that one too. But the odds of that happening on two different PCs at the same place is pretty large,so..... If someone else could reproduce this on their hardware then it would be a bug in EMC. But I still lean to the communications issue. But like you said it could still be a buffer even inside the chip.
