Now that is a question I'll let others more experienced expound on at
greater length than I would feel qualified to.

>From my hobby shop perspective, and stepper only experience, it seems to me
the low speed stepper is a hard act to follow. As long as it stays in
step, you will be where you told it to go within the resolution of the
motor/microstepper accuracy limits.

However, where time=money, the higher speed abilities of a well tuned servo
will pay the bills in two ways.

1. You can apply the usual recipes to cutting depth and speed for optimum
tool life, speeds which are often beyond the speed/torque ability of the
stepper, or the spindle power of a small mill. That is both more parts/day
and reduced cost in tooling right there. Miss-used of course you can break
tooling at a higher rate.

2. Because the servo's can often hit rapids that are several times faster,
again that is time saved and more parts in the output bin a day & that =
more profit.

But that would be about as far as I can go since I don't have any servo's
at all on my micromill and therefore no real world experience to draw from.

My micromill doesn't look much like what Harbor Freight sent me though, I
have the LMS big tables kit on it, and I threw away the Z drive and started
over. I can now put 155 lbs of push on a drill bit, whereas the OEM Z
drive bound the head to the post at about 5 lbs.
