I make some pretty inexpensive servo amps for brush motors, $125 each.  
Good to 120 V 20A.
They take a digital PWM input, so you could drive it with a 555 timer 
for testing.  I make a PWM controller for EMC to go with the servo amp.  
Most commercial servo amps do not take step/direction signals.  (I know 
how to make Yaskawa servo packs do that, however.)  You can get 
Copley/AMC analog servo amps on eBay with a little patience.
