I nearly bought a lathe which had lost its cross-slide (though one has
to wonder how) with the intention of making a new topslide.

That way you get the opportunity to make room for the nut. You gain a
lot of room once you realise that there is no longer any need for a
compound slide. Such a top-slide might as well incorporate a cast-in
bore for a toolchanger too.
