My SWAG is that the sealing coating on the magnets failed, which if exposed to the elements, will self destruct by the sintering falling apart. Perhaps some component of modern high detergent motor oil might damage the surface coating, with nominally a 60,000 hot miles timetable? I suspect Yamaha _does_ know what happened but won't allow as how they do else they might be faced with recalling them all at x miles to replace it. Most rice grinders don't get to 50k miles. There is always the exception to the rule though, I had a Honda 350F that had 57k on it, running well but leaking oil (they all did, the head gaskets leaked near the OHC chain from day one), at 57k miles. I had put 33k of them on it in 19 months when I swung my leg off it the last time & handed the key & title to the next owner. Used it for a chair car in the northern CA high Sierra's in the 81-82 time frame. As the license plate said, my other car is a 28' Pace Arrow. It got about 2.1 mpg. :( That R1 was a sweet looking and running bike, I would like to have one myself if I were still riding. I sold my last bike about 12 years ago when I realized my reflexes were slowing and that if I kept riding the way I liked to, I _was_ gonna kill myself. -- Cheers, Gene "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo.
